This client came in at the beginning of the week looking primarily for a new logo. This could then be adapted for all sorts of collateral in the near future. The client is a music store with products ranging from traditional instruments to modern day alternatives. The idea behind this logo was loosely based on the old music devices from the 80's and 90's. The reasoning for this is that the store sells such a large range of musical pieces (instruments/ accessories/ music books) that going down one route would then neglect the other sides. ie, guitars don't necessarily work well with clarinets etc.

A local company was after a freshening up of their current logo. Below is a design I sent over to them. Student Clean go into University housing to assist with the clean up of a years worth of excess! The design was adapted for letterheads, fax sheets and business cards. Student Clean were after a logo that had a professional edge to win contracts around the country ready for the start of the new terms.

The company decided not to go along with this design.

I was recently asked to create a logo for a company specialising in botox treatments. The theme I chose to work with was that of flowers and femininity, hoping to appeal to female clientele. I began by sourcing imagery of flowers and natural looking models with flowers, trying to link everything together a simple logo is created. I wasn't aiming for a clinical look but more a professional modern company, I think this has been achieved through the business card and leaflet.

I was asked by a local beauty spa to update their image. This included a new logo and corporate style. The first task was to create a new price list/ advert for the salon. I was given an open brief, they wanted a new look which was fresh and eye catching, something which sets them apart from other companies.

Below is the initial design which was sent to the client. There are still a few areas which need refining, such as contact details and possible colour changes. Overall I am pretty happy on how this is panning out!

So after going back and forth with the client, this is what he eventually decided upon. This is what will now be used on the business cards and soon to be produced external signage. The client also decided against using the wording hairdressing salon and opted for a more modern unisex hairdressing. The client also decided on the colour scheme, you may not be able to tell from this screen shot, but the colours used are a light green and an aubergine colour.

Local hairdresser Darryl Bates asked us to create a new brand for his salon. This new design would coincide with his moving to a new shop down the road. Once the logo was decided upon it would then be used on all materials, business cards, adverts, compliment slips and external signage outside the new shop.

Below is the logo that I think works a little too well?!...... it would be a challenge to get it to work on all the above materials as effectively as it does below

Once the logo was approved it was added to the design for the leaflet. The client had provided me with the bullet points. I decided to add a little introduction to the top of the leaflet and then images down the side to add colour and emphasis to the points. The client asked for a smart, simple design. I think this works!

Willow Wood Hospice is an organisation in Manchester that provides care to people with life threatening illnesses and support for families. In a few weeks time there will be a fundraising event in their name and I was approached to create a ticket/ invite to the evening.

The client provided the copy which was to be used and also had an idea of where she wanted things. It was decided to create an invite with a ticket strip and also a strip for the food choices the guest wanted. Below is the design which was sent to the client. I mentioned to her that I was still thinking about changing the title text down the left side to something a little more eye catching and interesting.I have left it for the minute as I want to make sure the copy and layout is all right and that the customer is satisfied. This way I know what amount of space I have to play with.

So earlier in the week I asked the question of

"how do you show a client a special print layer?"

In this instance its the use of spot varnish/ Spot UV. The finished business card wont have any yellow printed on the business card, but the printer requests that we use this spot colour to define the areas. In fact the flowers which appear over the logo wont be a colour at all. It will be a special varnish layer. So do you show the client 2 or 3 visuals? front/ back..... other?!

Saras is a company in beauty clinic in Manchester. Sara handed over a pretty open brief. She required a double sided business card/ appointment card and a double sided A6 price list. The client also had a basic idea of what colours she wanted. Ideally she was after a black and silver combination and possibly another colour (if needed). In the end we decided upon 4 colours. Black and silver as requested but also a light blue and lime green to be used sparingly just to catch the eye and offset the other 2 colours.

So after creating and getting the logo approved the next stage was to design a double sided business card. As with the previous brief, the client requested that bright colours be used and that it is modern and clean looking.

The front of the business card shows some Caribbean food with the reverse emphasising the freshness of the food. We added the tag line of "Fresh Cuisine Delivered to your door" The card once printed will have a Spot Varnish layer applied to the image and a section of the logo to try and give that professional and modern edge.

A client came in today after a new identity for his food company. The Real Food Delivery Company specialise in delivering freshly made food with a specialty in Caribbean food. The client was initially after a clean modern logo. The colour palette was pretty open, as long as it was bright!

There should be an old story about posting on a blog to early!!

And so when I thought the logo was going to be approved the client and myself agreed upon altering it slightly (adding the right angle top left) From here the client wanted to look at a different colour scheme instead of the blues he originally chose.

The client wanted to go for a lime green colour scheme. See below!

From here (eventually, and after a night to think on it) the client decided blue was better, even though deep down I liked the looks of the green version! Below is the final designs for the business card and advert. I have given the client the weekend to think it over, only time will tell if it was a good choice or not!!

Ok so as mentioned earlier things have been changed since I posted the original logo for Idb Property Services. Initially the client wanted the initials of the name to be upper case i and lowercase d and b. Since then the client has asked for the design to be altered to incorporate the lower case i.

Aswell as a business card the client also wanted a voucher/ advert to give out to prospective customers. The amount of information he wanted meant the logo had to be adapted. I shouldnt of done this and I will put it down as something to remember for next time. This time though it worked.... luckily and we have come up with a new logo. Slightly different from what I originally designed, but its more to what the client was wanting. Win win all round!

Been a few weeks since some serious logo work, so it was nice to get this job. The only thing the client mentioned in the brief were the colour scheme and the name. Now this type of approach doesnt always work, but luckily this one worked pretty instantly. I might show the workings in another post just to show how this final design came about.

I believe the logo works well. Currently the client has only asked for a business card, hopefully this can progress onto stationary and posssibly some online work. I can see this working on the majority of media!

Finally got this one in the can, or at least sent off to print. The basic design was sorted a few weeks back, but the client kept on asking for small amends such as taking the logo off the front page, and then adding a bit of a description to the front, and then we made the description smaller, and it eventually became a sentence!!

Im looking forward to getting this back from print. The client went for a premium gloss finish so the images and black space should look pretty tasty!

Long long time since work has been posted. A regular client with the company asked us for a 'funky and fun' idea for their party invites.

Natures Nursery is a private nursery in the North West which also runs 'Running Wild' an activity club for special occasions such as birthdays. A few of the items on the invite are regularly used in other items for Natures Nursery, so it was a case of choosing a colour scheme and getting all the items to fit and work.

Ashton Discount Warehouse is a store in the middle of the town of Ashton-under-Lyne.

They sell furniture for bathrooms, bedrooms, and kitchens. They basically cater for almost every room in the house. The client came in late last week wanting a double sided full colour leaflet producing. They were after an high end piece to give out to clients as a guide of some of their bedroom stock.

The piece is almost approved, we are just waiting on a better image for the front cover. We are slightly concerned that it isn't high enough quality to be printed and it would be a huge shame for the leaflet to be let down by this image

As well as the business card we designed the client also wanted a vouched produced. He had a few requirements, these included making it business card sized, using the colours we mentioned in the previous post and once again make it modern and eye catching.

It was decided that as the business card used the yellow tones the client asked for, we should distinguish the vouched by using the blue tones on this card.

The reverse of the card is a replica of the business card, keeping some continuity between collateral.

Ok so a couple of weeks ago we designed a double sided leaflet for a local beauty clinic. A couple of amends later and here is the finished article. The client requested that the image be replaced for one more similar to their website, basically just to keep things tied in, and also the listing on the front.

An annual event in Manchester for charity. An evening of entertainment/ boxing and a meal

The client required 2 different kinds of tickets. One which would give access to the boxing and then the evenings entertainment, and then a cheaper ticket for just the boxing. It was decided to keep the style the same. The same style has been used for the last 2 years so for continuity reasons it was decided to keep the same look and feel. We decided to show the difference in ticket but the use of colour. Where red shows the full price ticket, the yellow shows the cheaper alternative.

Well, what can I say, I tried, but it looks like I failed. I tried to push the various colours for Platinum salon but they wanted something simple and a lot cleaner. They had seen in the shop the work done for Hayley and wanted a similar colour scheme.

Now I hate copying work, especially between different clients, once an idea is used and a job done then its onto the new sheet of paper and a new style.

So for Platinum I flipped the colours round. This time using a white background with 80% grey and 100% magenta. Keeps it nice and clean I feel. Layout has remained the same luckily. Lets just hope the client likes this version.

I feel this month I'm sure I have had my fair share of hair & beauty clinics and salons but they still keep on coming! This client couldn't be any more local if they tried...... being as they are next door to the studio!

The salon has recently been taken over and so they are after an overhaul of their collateral. First being price lists.

Now I am not sure if I was looking at an old school apple advert or if I had too many skittles at lunch but I feel this brave new colour scheme could work. The different treatments they offer will be divided over the different coloured cards. Not being overly keen on their current logo (the P) I have purposely made it smaller and at the bottom next to the price list. Hopefully they may ask for a new logo to go with their new brave branding!!

Ok so I feel I should make up for the lack of total blogging activity over the last week or two. So here is another post, come on, feel privileged!!

As promised these are some shots of the final piece for Nails by Hayley, the nail salon in Manchester. Artwork can be viewed here. Sorry the photos are a little suspect, its just to show how the final piece looked after printing. I am still holding out on some studio time so I can get everything shot in one go with proper lighting! We decided to use a recycled stock for this project, not only to keep the costs down but also to add to the feel of the product (get it? hands? touch?!)

Below is a double sided leaflet visual for a beauty salon/ clinic. We have set out a plan of monthly mail outs providing latest offers and showcasing different parts of the company. Below is the introductory leaflet. The company already has a strong visual online brand so its upto us to adapt this for print. The idea shown is the starting point which was sent to the client today, hopefully tomorrow she will reply with feedback and amends so I will post any amends if/ when they come through!

Cant believe its just under a week since my last post..... I feel a little broken inside now!!

In all honesty I wish I could blame it on good tv or something but for once that isn't the case. Its been a busy week on the social front. A case of friends birthdays and problems with the car have meant the blog has been on the back burner. On the design front it has been a couple of days waiting for approved artwork to come back from the printers. There is something about getting a 3 or 4 boxes packed full of your final artwork all printed and seeing the clients happy with their final product. Will get some photos taken of some of the final work.

On an upside I have finally been given some clearance to dip my toe into the world of web design. At times it has felt like a losing battle and it still might be, but its another string to add to my bow. I have been able to design websites for a few years now, but times change and so does technology and ideas so its always a good thing to have a catch up and re-learn better theory.

Tomorrow should lead to another design based blog..... hopefully!

Here I was thinking the business card was close to completion and I get an email from the client with some amends. In brief.... The image is to be placed on the front, a smaller logo is to be used on the reverse, and the number is also wanted on the front. The client was also unsure on the colour of the logo. He wasn't sure if it worked with the image that we were supplied with. So as you can see below. I sent the client a number of variations which I feel use colours complimentary to the image.

Last week a client requested us to design a logo for their guest house in North Wales. The logo was approved and we were then asked to create a double sided business card.

The client requested we use the image of the hotel and sent us the copy to use somewhere on the card. I think the card works well, showing a smart but welcoming guest house on the front, and then a small piece on the reverse advertising aspects of the hotel.

Festival of Flight

Blast from the past with this logo. This logo was designed for a campaign backed by the University of Salford to get more people involved with flying. The campaign involved all aspects of flight, whether it be kite flying, hand gliding or flying a helicopter!

The logo evolved from a simple font where the descenders were increased to give a feeling of motion and flow. The flight side is further shown by raising the counters higher than they normally would be.

Apple Property Maintenance came in a couple of weeks ago to have a double sided leaflet created. I did the initial design (click here) and sent it to the client. After a couple of days they came back with minor changes and additions, the final design is below. The client here was after a single sided flyer to distribute around the local area. Her only requirements were that it be eye catching and that I try to use the companies corporate colours (dark blue and red)

The final design included a spot varnish layer over the text, to grab the readers attention and to separate it from the rest of the post the potential customer will receive.

Thought I would try something a little different for this client. The brief was something 'funky and eye catching' which usually annoys me as it usually means bright garish colours and big chunky fonts, again, usually Impact!

Ok so yesterday I posted the design for my business card, and as much as I want it to be simple and plain I thought it was far too plain so added some colour to it. Now I have been told that the spot varnish I want for my logo shows up best on a dark background, so that really rules out most colours! The grey also matches in nicely with the website!

Thought I would also add the website address, no point in handing out business cards to prospective clients if there is no way to show off my work!!

This was a piece done a few years ago using After Effects among other programs. I was asked to make an animation centered around letters and numbers..... Pretty vague but I gave it a go!
I chose to show the life of a dandelion seed, from an initial gust of wind through to reproduction
